Aging-In-Place

Nothing means more than family to most people.

I always felt that my parents would need my assistance as they became seniors but I never knew that designing certain areas of their home to accommodate their needs would be part of how I could assist them.

I find that looking out for and looking after seniors raises even more questions about my Generation X peers and the end of the boomer generation that is just retiring.

What do you see when you picture your retirement and beyond? What type of home setup are you considering for any health issues you may face in the future?

Why I’m passionate about Aging-in-Place Design ...

For almost 20 years of being in kitchen and bath design, as well as facilitating renovations for clients of all ages, I started to see some emerging patterns amongst my senior clientele that needed to be addressed. Many needed specific special features to be added into their renovations to assist them.

Some time ago, I noticed many of my friends starting to face challenges looking out for their senior parents as they refused to leave their homes to go to retirement facilities (no matter how nice they might be) and that brought up issues of mobility, navigating stairs & bathroom safety typically.

I am a woman in my mid 50's of the sandwich generation. I still have an adult child at home as well as senior parents. Luckily, my parents, who are in their early 80s, can still live at home successfully because we started to talk about the issues with the design of specific rooms a number of years ago.

My mission is to redefine what “Home Sweet Home” means to each and every homeowner. I want to advocate for individuals to be able to live life on their own terms.

Learning to live with the changing landscape of our health, while living in our own home, is definitely easier if the surroundings have adaptations that do some of the work for you. By planning ahead and making modifications to stay at home as long as possible, people will have many more options about what their living situation is going to look like.
